CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

TRIGGER

THE GIRL WITH DYED red hair wasn’t feeling much like herself. With the hospital stretched to its limits, she was assigned to a bed in a busy hallway. Her nose was filled with that astringent hospital smell.

Lucky for her, the timely blast of Narcan blocked the effects of opiates on the brain and restored her breathing. For someone who almost died, she had bounced back quite rapidly. Well, everything except her memory. The ER doctor explained that amnesia happened to some people who survived an overdose. He noted that some patients got their memories back, but his tone was robotic and did not sound very reassuring. Instead, he stressed that physically she would be fine, and to be thankful she had gotten help she did.

Looking down at her arms and legs, she expected some sort of familiarity, but it felt as if she was staring at the body of a stranger. From the cutting scars on her forearms and her inner thighs, the girl knew she had issues. Her fingers traced over a few fresh wounds that had recently scabbed over. There were other lines that had faded. She wondered if they were self-inflicted injuries from her teenage years. The scars made her angry. Why would anyone have to slash their own skin to escape pain? Had she traded being a cutter for drinking, or even drugs? Was this her first overdose?

There was a part of her that did not want to know the truth. This brain reset could be a fresh start. One thing was certain. These cuts were a thing of the past. There was no way she was ever going to hurt herself again. Even though she had forgotten most everything, she was certain that she had wasted too much time letting others control her life.

She laid back, absently staring at the speckled panels on the drop ceiling while listening to heavy breathing from the man in a nearby bed. Her mind was searching for something to trigger a memory, any memory.

Nothing.

But her brain wasn’t broken. She was processing information and thoughts just fine. In fact, her neurons were fresh and very efficient. She had a photographic recollection of everything that happened since she woke up in that crappy apartment. The first thing she saw was that handsome guy who carried her to the hospital. She could recall everything about him. How there was an odd yellow fleck in the green of his left eye. How he smelled like Ivory soap, no deodorant, and some generic moisturizer he must have gotten from a hotel bathroom.

Had they ever had sex? There was a polite distance in his mannerisms that suggested they were acquaintances or possibly strangers. When he spoke, he looked directly into her eyes, always checking to see that she was okay. He never said her name. Wait, what was her name? She looked at her hospital wristband. It was blank where her name should have been.

Her thoughts returned to the large man. Was he her guardian angel? Her immediate answer was No.
